The 3-Tier Reading Model will assist us in reaching all students. We know who our struggling readers are. The goal of this intervention is to refer fewer and fewer students to Special education. We need to identify kids early, get them "fixed", so they can progress along at grade level. In the end, this will really help us all---we'll not have kids in 5th grade with severe, reading difficulties that should have been taken care of in the primary grades. I HOPE this model is the solution! One good plus is that our current Reading series has all 3 components built in. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Although our focus on K-3 will truly show results in the future, my concern is for the intermediate grades, especially when small schools, like Ashford, has no APPALREAD to assist. Do you find this valuable?

Mr. Barker,
I appreciate your comments and your understanding of the 3-Tier Reading Model. I believe in the past many students have placed in Special Education programs who may not necessarily belong there. When students receive solid reading instruction based on the 5 essential components of reading in Tier 1, 80% of them should succeed in reading without any additional intervention. That is a POWERFUL statement! It begs us to examine our practices and make the changes needed so that ALL students will succeed.
