Although student work is posted throughout the school, we usually don't combine student work from different grade levels. I never thought about displaying student work in community areas. This year we hope to have more classroom demonstrations with parents to expose them to reading and math lessons, so they can understand standards based learning techniques. Exceptional, exciting teaching strategies need to be recognized and displayed for parents to identify with. Pictures and samples should be posted, presented, or demonstrated. Many times marvelous things go on in the classroom that parents, as well as other staff members are not aware of.

Elements of the Parent Involvement Policies of Boston, N.Y., and San Diego are discussed in detail. There are many great ideas that we could implement in our district and our school. Well worth reading this entire chapter. Complete the checklist on pgs 247-250. Provide three (3) improvements you could make in your program to improve parental involvement and provide high academic student achievement.

According to Beyond the Bake Sale, there are five reasons to rethink parent involvement in your school. After reading these reasons, (pgs. 2-11), which seems to have the most impact? Did any other the reasons surprise you? Why or why not?

Who's in Charge Here Anyway? Chapter 8 offers numerous ideas for involving parents. Discover how to share decision making and effectively practice the democratic process. Use the checklist on pages 214-218 and determine how well your school is doing? Although we are implementing many of the strategies provided, there's always room for nurturing and refining new growth.
One valuable activity we used this past year was having a Science/Social Studies Work Night. We took the Science/Social Studies Fair a step ahead. Parent and community members were invited to assist students to research and develop projects for the fair. Teachers' roles were to facilitate and guide parents and students through the process. It was a huge success! Parents were very excited and requested more of these types of activities.

This chapter discusses building trust between staff and parents through a three-part "joining process". In the joining process, the staff: "welcomes parents into the school, honors their participation, and connects with parent through a focus on the children and their learning". After completing the "How Family-Friendly Is Your School?" checklist (pp. 75-79), please share your response to the reflection question: What steps could you take to help your school become more family-friendly?

This chapter is about all students having an advocate. An advocate is a person who speaks out for another. An advocate can be a parent but can also be someone else that cares for the student. An advocate must be in the child's life for the long haul, a person who knows the child well, talks to them often, and sees them every day. Someone who believes in the child and wants them to do well.

This chapter focuses on how to build partnerships between schools and parents. Pages 28-34 discuss four core beliefs that build a foundation for working with families. There is also a set of questions about treating parents as equal partners in improving their children's learning. Answer the questions on pages 38-39 to see if your school follows parent involvement practices listed in the federal guidelines. Are you surprised at some of the activities listed? Do you see activities your school is missing?

Chapter 2 states there are 4 levels of partnership achievement: Partnership School, Open-Door School, Come If We Call School and Fortress School. Take the quiz (pg. 15-18) and see where your school falls. Were you surprised? What can the school do to take it up to the next level?

I had read this chapter weeks ago, have been very busy, but when I thumbed through those pages to jog my memory, I had dogearred several pages which I found rather interesting. One of which was the Teacher's Story on page 60. She spoke about having the active listening training as a bank teller, because people were so concerned with their money. A training such as this would be so beneficial for school personnel because most people would be as concerned with their children, if not more so. I also found some information about home visits, which would be beneficial. The only drawback about those suggestions were lack of time, staff, and the willingness of parents who really need the information. I have conducted home visits in school when Maryann and myself, and Amy and myself made contact with 100% of the parents (grandparents, uncle, foster parents, guardian) or someone. In a small school, this was possible, so beneficial to us as teachers to get acquainted with families and understand the children.

It certainly seems as though there are many views of the ways things truly are. When "looking out the window", we often encounter situations which are out of our control. If we had more control over such things, school and society would be better. It is just too bad that we don't. But as we "Look in the mirror", there are many factors we do control and in those things we do make a difference. I am discovering Title I is responsible for bringing about many of the wishes spoken about by the teachers in the book through staff and funding. In the perfect world, we would have additional staff to aid in making those home-school connections and alleviating some of those negative things spoken about which were referred to as "Looking out the window".

I have worked at a half dozen schools in Boone County and have never encountered a school which wasn't a partnership school, at the worst, an open-door school. I find it hard to believe that schools like the "Come if we call, or the Fortress even exist". I believe we are in the advanced category after examining the bullets for each type.

This year Wharton El. hosted "Tigers' Safari" /Open House. Postcards were mailed to all 81 families inviting them to the Aug. 28, 08 event. Students took follow-up notices home on their first day describing the "Safari" events, including: Villiage Tour led by Safari Guides from last year's 5th graders; Travel Cuisine and make your own trail mix; campfire to sit around while eating and for the closing; and sessions in the Tigers' Educational Facility. We were amazed at the attendance of 171 people (even had to make a quick trip for more sandwich supplies)! Based on some of the suggestions from "Beyond the Bake Sale", we set-up Safari registration tables outside and had the tour groups form on the playground while staff members mingled; this was the first time we had a tour of the facility, and just the second time we've had our refreshments outside (the previous outdoor event had a larger than normal attendance, also). Even though the rain prevented our closing around the campfire, everyone appeared to have a wonderful time and many positive comments were shared. I'd love to hear about other Open House Events-PLEASE SHARE!

I do wish the media , governor, Dr. Paine or Boone County Board of Education would write a real comparison of the education system in Japan or China vs the United States. We hear these countries are ahead of us in math and science. WHY? We educate all children for 12 or more years. Students go to school 180 days about 7 hours. Why is it we never hear about the long days - hours, how many years everyone gets to go to school, or who cleans the school, what the children must go through in order to go on to school after the 9 years they are offered an education in Japan or China. Teachers work hard in Boone County. When others compare the US to other countries, they leave out a lot of information. The United States or West Virgina could change our educational system to run like Japan or China.
