In moving students to become 21st century learners, some form of progress monitoring is essential. Progress monitoring is different than benchmarking and should be treated as such in the classroom and school. Benchmarking is for all students generally 3 times per year to make sure all students are on track to be successful readers. Progress monitoring occurs every 2-4 weeks for those students who are not on benchmark OR who may exhibit a tendency to drop below benchmark. The purpose of progress monitoring is to provide "just in time instruction and make instructional adjustments" for students.
The structure of progress monitoring at first can appear overwhelming for the classroom teacher and SHOULD NOT be the sole responsibility of the Title I teacher. It should be a shared, collaborative effort of classroom teacher and Title I teacher. My advice is to make a committment to understand progress monitoring, implement administering progreess monitoring in an incremental, workable way for the school and develop a mechanism to study progress monitoring results for instrucitonal purposes. Thanks for asking me to be a part of this discussion forum. As I am very busy if there is anything in particular you want me to weight in on, someone out there remind me to check the site. Thanks to each of you for all you do for students everyday. Bev Kingery |

Whitesville finished our training on Dibels this past week. I understand the need for progress monitoring. On page 11 of Our book
What is the Three -Tier Reading Model it states we should do fall screening plus winter and spring progress monitoring. On tier 2 progress monitoring twice a month on target skill to ensure adequate progress and learning. This is not what I understood from our Dibels training. Page 19 (c ) states ongoing professional development to provide teachers with the necessary tools to ensusre every student receives quality reading instruction. Is our county going to provide this for all teachers?
Do you find this valuable?

We have been doing progress monitoring as part of the RtI Project using the DIBELS program every two weeks (Tier 2). I have found progress monitoring to be a key component in analyzing how well a child is learning how to read and to help me reflect upon my teaching. The DIBELS assessments are research-based predictors of reading success. By using the DIBELS assessments I am are able to adjust my instruction to meet the needs of individual students, make flexible groups and learn more about research-based methods of reading instruction. K-3 teachers at Sherman Elementary are also becoming more aware of what it takes for a child to be able to suceed in the next grade level.

The benefits of progress monitoring would be knowing your students while encouraging collaboration with the other teachers. This is good information to have available to the primary teachers, Title I, and their administrators. I would be interested in knowing more about the training and progress of the teachers.
