Parent involvement is a must. If you can get the parents to support the teacher, the school and their child then together they will become a winning team for their child's education. For this to be a success we need to make the parents feel welcome to the school envirnment and feel that they must contribute to the school envirnment.

Getting parents involved in the Middle School is a very challenging obstacle to leap over!
It is so hard to get parents involved at the Middle School for many reasons. Many times parents have burned themselves out at the Elementary level and don't have the time or see the importance. There is also the large size of the Middle School and the number of students often scare parents. The Middle School also loses the "Neighborhood" feel, it isn't like the little school down the road. It is more of a community in itself. I often tell groups to reflect on how they were at the Middle School age, it is a big change from the grade school. It is a time in life when many children want to be independent of their parents and try to push them away. That is just part of growing up. All of these, among many others, help us understand why parent involvement dwindles in the Middle Level. Even though it is difficult it is worth the effort to get parents involved. |

It sounds like the people that have responded so far to this prompt are really going in the right direction. Communication with families about school programs and student progress through effective school-to-home and home-to-school communications is the key. Involving parents in their children's learning activities and other curriculum-linked decisions can only be done in collaboration with the teachers, counselors, and administrators of the schools.

Great minds think alike. In Cabell County, we also began exploring the Joyce Epstein model this year. In fact, on Wednesday, we have a consultant from the National Network of Partnership Schools coming to work with teams from our Title I schools. We see the NNPS model and the WVDE Strategic Plan as two sides of the same coin. NNPS will help us organize our thinking for the strategic plan work which is coming up this spring. Also, at the national Title I conference in Long Beach last month, Dr. Epstein DONATED an hour of her time to meet with the staff from Cabell County to answer our questions prior to the workshop that will be held this week. That was a most gracious and generous gesture on her part. It spoke volumes to us about the sincere dedication of Dr. Epstein for her work and her parent involvement model.
