This year Wharton El. hosted "Tigers' Safari" /Open House. Postcards were mailed to all 81 families inviting them to the Aug. 28, 08 event. Students took follow-up notices home on their first day describing the "Safari" events, including: Villiage Tour led by Safari Guides from last year's 5th graders; Travel Cuisine and make your own trail mix; campfire to sit around while eating and for the closing; and sessions in the Tigers' Educational Facility. We were amazed at the attendance of 171 people (even had to make a quick trip for more sandwich supplies)! Based on some of the suggestions from "Beyond the Bake Sale", we set-up Safari registration tables outside and had the tour groups form on the playground while staff members mingled; this was the first time we had a tour of the facility, and just the second time we've had our refreshments outside (the previous outdoor event had a larger than normal attendance, also). Even though the rain prevented our closing around the campfire, everyone appeared to have a wonderful time and many positive comments were shared. I'd love to hear about other Open House Events-PLEASE SHARE!

We host a monthly parent meeting called the Breakfast Club. At this meeting we are able to offer the parents refresments such as orange juice and breaskfast pizza to enjoy during the meeting. We always have an agenda and discuss issues which the parents are concerned about, as well as provide parent training which the parents have requested. We also use this opportunity to get the parents' input into schoolwide programs. Minutes of the discussion and parent input are taken and discussed with the administration. The Principal or Vice Principal often attend the Breakfast Club meetings and participate in discussions and/or scheduled parent training. This last year we included a parent book study, which was well received by the parents.
