I found the 3-Tier Reading Model book to be a valuable resource. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know how to implement and structure each of the tiers in the reading model. Sherman Elementary has participated as an Response to Intervention (RtI) school for two years. We are still refining each of the tiers. I have been told it takes 3 years to truly implement a good 3-Tier Reading Model. This book will serve as a guide to help us. I have spend many hours researching what works in the teaching of reading and I have learned so much from reading this book.

The 3-Tier Reading Model book, has given me more insight and some additional understanding into the three-tier model. We have been able to get our feet wet with the implementation of Tier 1 (Core Classroom Instruction). We have been able to do this by using learning stations for leveled reading groups and by assessing our students more. Once the students' targeted skills and needs are determined, we will use this information and data to place students in the Tier-2 (intervention groups). Students in this group will receive additional time with the Title I teacher or whomever is helping with the interventions. Finally, at Tier-3, students will receive an even greater amount of time on interventions. I believe this is going to be a challenging task in order make a difference in the everyday learning of our students. This model may cause us to change the ways we instruct our students, however, we will hopefully see some positive results once we have seen all of the components of the 3-Tier model in use. One concern I have about this 3-tier model, is having the personnel to implement and use these tiers effectively. It is difficult in a small school because you don't have as many people to work with on an on-going basis. Time and personnel are two concerns I have about the 3-tier model.

The book study gave me a better understanding of each tier and how it is to be used. I feel more comfortable with how I am implementing tier 1 with our small leveled reading groups. We initiated the paper and pencil DIBELS assessing tool in the fall to establish our leveled reading groups readily. Due to a lack of hardware we were unable to assess the reading groups through DIBELS progress monitoring, but using our reading series assessments we continue to monitor each student's progress and work to improve the targeted skills. Students with the greatest need work an additional 30 minutes with the Title 1 Reading instructor. This is how I understand the tier ll will work with the identified skills targeted for the intervention group. Tier lll will not take place until students have been identified as having tier lll needs in first grade. For this to be most effective is to have the manpower to implement tier lll. If our tier ll is implemented by our Title l Reading Teacher scheduling would be most difficult with a small school staff to begin tier lll.

The book study helped me remember some of the fine details that I had forgotten since the summer sessions in Huntington. I think that this book will be really useful when we do it with our entire staff. It will address many of the questions that teachers have. I see it as a valuable piece in the implenentation of the three tier reading model.

It seems that many people still have questions about Tier 1. Also, the technology in using the wiki has been a stiff learning curve for many.Others' thoughts?

I'm trying to utilize all of this new technology, but I can't distinguish wetpaint from wiki. One takes me to the other. I don't know if there is enough professional development to make me functional. Retirement may not be a bad idea. Seriously, I'm not ready to retire yet! But the work load is becoming very stressful.

The book has been helpful to me. I am guarded optimistic about implemetation of the next tiers. I feel that we need more time to digest 3 tier with all the other stuff on our plates. I assume we will have training on the other tiers as we prepare for implementation. OUr other obstacle like everyone else is utilizing the technology.

I especially liked the appendices section. These are great evaluative tools for me as an administrator. These also can keep teachers on track with what they are doing (assessing). The graphic organizers offered in the numbered appendices are being utilized by my staff already. I found lots more great, graphic organizers on0line when I googled "graphic organizers". I printed several of these and gave each of my teachers a book of these so they could pick and choose which ones they wanted to use. This book gave practical, specific information and was very easy to read. It is my hope that we can reach ALL of our children and assist each one with reaching his/her potential in Reading.
My only question is: Will training be provided in implementing Tier II and III? Also, I would like to send some of my teachers to observe exemplary Reading programs whereby all 3 tiers are being implemented. Please let me know.

There are so many components to the 3 Tier Reading Model and times when it can be frustrating to be borderline operational (does that make sense?) with each tier. Tier I still needs major adjustments to get the small groups and work stations operating successfully. As a reading specialist I consider the pull-out component of my program to be Tier II struggling with scheduling homogenous groups, cooperative planning, etc. I would like more detailed information than what I'm currently getting from DIBELS for the struggling second and third graders. I've progress monitored "off grade level", but have difficulty getting beneficial reports. Perhaps this will be covered during the next DIBELS TOT session. I agree with Roger regarding the benefits of the Appendices and will be checking out many of the websites.
