The 3-Tier Reading Model will assist us in reaching all students. We know who our struggling readers are. The goal of this intervention is to refer fewer and fewer students to Special education. We need to identify kids early, get them "fixed", so they can progress along at grade level. In the end, this will really help us all---we'll not have kids in 5th grade with severe, reading difficulties that should have been taken care of in the primary grades. I HOPE this model is the solution! One good plus is that our current Reading series has all 3 components built in.

I can see where all students will be helped. The students that need extra help will receive help earlier and shouldn't fall behind.

I feel that in my reading, I have raised more quesitons for myself than I have answered. I agree, also that I can see that this model has a good solid foundation. I too see 5th graders that have problems that have folloewed them throughout the years that could have been corrected with early intervention. I really do think, however, we need to observe a school or class that has worked with this model for more than one or two years. Is there such a thing as a "mentor school"? I can read about this model, but if I need advice I would like to be able to ask someone with years of experience dealing with it.
